Gifts to the College of Arms
Overmantels
In 2021 The Society commissioned and presented five wooden carved overmantels which have now been installed over the office doors of those Heralds and Kings of Arms who previously did not have such a distinction. Designed by Herald Painter Timothy Noad, they were carved by William Barsley. a graduate of the City and Guilds of London School of Art’s three-year diploma course in Ornamental Woodcarving and Gilding. Morant Garter Armorial
In 2022 with the help of the Society the College was able to purchase the Morant Garter Armorial.
Alfred Morant was a distinguished Victorian civil engineer who inherited the task of completing Papworth’s Ordinary of British Armorials from his deceased cousin John Papworth. The acquired manuscript comprises a compilation of the arms of the Knights of the Garter and extensive notes on their history
The Beltz Patent
A grant of arms dated 21st March 1804 to brothers George-Frederick, John-Philip and Samuel Beltz. At the time of the grant George-Frederick was Clerk to Sir Isaac Heard, Garter, and eventually rose to become Lancaster Herald.
The framed patent now hangs in the West Wing Library and was donated by the Society in 2022.
