The armiger is a lawyer of French Canadian heritage, descended from Samuel Gauthier de Martiniere of Poitou. The azure field reflects these connections and his Roman Catholic faith, which is also represented by the cross. The alerions were associated mythically with Godfrey de Bouillon, founder of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, of which Mr Gauthier is a member. They are also associated with Yves, patron saint of lawyers, so are particularly apt for these arms. Mr Gauthier’s wife, K Elizabeth Ann, is a MacGregor. Both are members of the Clan Gregor Society and the crest and badge relate to this connection. The sweet grass stocks represent the Gauthier family’s heritage in Canada.
