The saltire alludes to the attributed arms of the Kingdom of Mercia and the crowned lion’s face to Stephen Friar’s membership (now fellowship) of The Heraldry Society. The male griffin, the legendary guardian of treasure, refers both to Mr Friar’s work as a district councillor and his former occupation of headmaster.
